Report: on the safety of elderly people discharged from hospital into care homes
27/05/2020
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Healthwatch Redbridge, today (27 May) published its findings from a small survey of social care organisations across Redbridge.
Cathy Turland, Chief Executive at Healthwatch Redbridge said:
‘We found a number of issues and concerns regarding PPE, testing and concerns regarding hospital discharge.”
The survey was conducted via telephone interviews across 31 care and nursing homes for people who may be elderly or have conditions such as dementia or learning disabilities.
The initial findings are raising concerns about three main themes; the lack of appropriate testing, staff being asked to complete very long shifts, and the scarcity of PPE (personal protective equipment).

About us
We are the independent champion for people using local health and social care services. We listen to what people like about services and what could be improved. We share their views with those with the power to make change happen. We also share them with Healthwatch England, the national body, to help improve the quality of services across the country. People can also speak to us to find information about health and social care services available locally. Our sole purpose is to help make care better for people.
In summary - Local Healthwatch is here to:
help people find out about local health and social care services
listen to what people think of services
help improve the quality of services by letting those running services and the government know what people want from care
encourage people running services to involve people in changes to care
Everything that Healthwatch does will bring the voice and influence of local people to the development and delivery of local services; putting local people at the heart of decision-making processes.
