Your Route to Urgent Care
Hospital emergency departments can get really busy. You can often be seen faster and more easily by other urgent care services in your local community, like your GP or a local pharmacist.
If you have a more serious illness, you should visit your GP practice website or NHS 111 online for advice. If you cannot access the internet, call 111 or your GP practice directly.
A 999 call should only be used for life-threatening emergencies or serious injuries.
If you need help now, and you're not sure what to do
Go to 111.nhs.uk or call 111
Find an NHS dentist near you
You can contact any NHS dentist and ask for an appointment if you have symptoms or need a routine check-up. Some dental practices offer both NHS and private appointments. Ask for an NHS appointment.
You may be asked to join a waiting list before you can get a dental appointment. At your first visit, you may be asked to fill out a form to register with the dental practice, but this does not mean you'll always be able to get NHS dental care at the same dental practice in the future.
If you cannot get an NHS dental appointment
You may find it difficult to find a local dentist that's offering NHS appointments.
If you’re unable to find an NHS dentist, you can contact your local integrated care board (ICB). Your local ICB manages dental services in your area and may be able to tell you where you can get a local dental appointment.
How can I access an emergency dentist?
- Call a dentist: some surgeries offer urgent appointments at short notice
- If you do not have a dentist, find one by calling NHS 111
